NEWS RELEASE

What would you do if you had an incurable neurologic illness? Quit work and sit things out? Go on disability? Jim Haverlock was handed just such a challenge some 13 years ago when his doctors first told him he had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a diagnosis later amended to progressive multiple sclerosis. After a few dark moments, Jim rose from the mat and began wrestling the dragon which seemed determined to make his life miserable and short. He went on to found and run a very successful online Internet furniture business called 1shop4u.com. But that’s not all!

Jim, being a man who feels that the best way to help yourself is to reach out and help others, took on helping people mired in poverty, sickness and lack of opportunities: The people of Uganda. Jim’s involvement led to the creation of Compassion-Care, a 501C-3 nonprofit organization which, in its short existence, has rolled up its sleeves and taken on such projects as:

Gabba Centre for Deaf, Dumb, Blind Children – in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa

And

Planning for a new FREE School in a remote area of Uganda where people have nothing to their name, not even clothing, but want an education for their children so they can have hope for the future, and an opportunity for employment. This school will be a very simple structure on land we already own. There is room for a garden where students and staff can grow their own vegetables, a simple solar cooker kitchen area, and some minimal supplies on-hand such as books, pens pencils, paper and other school supplies. The salary for a teacher is just $100 per month.

The ARTEMISININ Project which is dedicated to aid those afflicted with malaria by buying and disseminating the anti-malarial drug artemesinin. Artemesinin is a plant-derived compound that has been proven effective in combating malaria. We at Compassion Care want to make it available to those who cannot travel or afford medical care.

IN THE TRENCHES – COMPASSION CARE’S DIRECTORS:

Lyn Darnall is employed as a statistician at both SRI (San Clemente, CA) and the University of California-Irvine. She is the author of many papers and at least one book. Lyn is one of those giving souls who looks out after others and beats the drum constantly for worthy causes.

Jim Haverlock is owner of 1shop4u.com, one of the Internet’s busiest online home furnishings shopping center, and has 8 children, a foster son, 18 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren (A fact that has made him, in the words of Compassion Care co-director Dr. Anthony Payne, “A Darwinian success story few can top”) Jim is former President of the Chamber United Way, as well as a mover and a shaker in his local Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, and St. Joseph’s Church (950 family church with its own grade school). Jim story is movingly told in his much acclaimed autobiography, “Challenging the Dragon.” As one whose life has been lived at least partially in the “shadowlands,” Jim has a heart for those who are challenged physically, materially and in terms of lack of opportunity for self-improvement.

Teddy Namagembe (Kampala, Uganda, Africa) is an accountant, though to become so she had to surmount many dire challenges including poverty to obtain an education and help her family and others. Teddy has a great desire to help her people, especially the very poor. Among her inspired ideas are establishment of a FREE School in remote Uganda, as well as making available universal access to a basic education, as well as spiritual guidance, food, clothing and improved living conditions for the poorest of the poor.

Dr. Anthony G. Payne is a biological theorist and Director of Invention & Development at Weller Health Institute (California), author of 3 books and numerous articles and papers, as well as the creative force behind numerous novel treatment approaches for various kinds of cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and more. Dr. Payne spends a great deal of his time at work and home laboring away on devices, regimens and hypotheses that are geared to alleviate suffering and turn the tables on many intractable conditions and some incurable diseases. Dr. Payne and his Japanese wife, Sachi, live in sunny southern California.

Pamela Purtell is employed with 1shop4u.com (Twisp WA) and is a single mom with 3 children. Pam has been and is involved in helping young people including school programs. She genuinely cares about people, health issues and education and is an all-around giving person.

Why Uganda?
When I first learned of people living in remote villages, who could not afford even a shirt and who live naked, it was easy. First, these people want their children to have an education, it is just not within their means. The families have no education to secure one of the few jobs that are available, so they raise some little food if they can, and weather permitting. This just barely gets them by and most of the time they have just one small meal a day.
Then I met some of the young people, had long discussions about their life, their dreams and their desire to obtain an education. Then looking into the schools, I found tuition to be cheap compared to the USA, and decided to start helping as best I could. It has been rewarding to follow each of them as they progress through school. They are intelligent, and the ones I have sponsored are at the top of their class. They have become much happier, work very hard, and are determined to better their lot in life. But their is only so many that one person, disabled and earning a meager income, can help.
How can one not help? For me it is impossible to turn my head the other way.

As of now, 2 new wells are in operation aiding the 540 students at St. Catherine's College at Kampala as well as 3 small villages that surround the college. The excitement and happiness shown by the students, the school staff, and the village people is reward enough. The headmaster of the college informs us that the students now have two to three hours more study time since they are free of carrying water daily over a distance of some 2.5 miles one way. And this was not clean, safe water which caused much sickness.

Help Make the Uganda Water Project Reality !!

How would you feel about carrying water in a can for over 2 miles? Just so you could have something to drink today, and to bathe in? How about carrying water for your entire family so they can survive another day?

This is what is happening to so many people in countries that do not enjoy the benefits we have here in America. Can you just imagine for a minute, a small college of 400 students, teachers and they all have to carry water daily? This is reality for St. Catherine's College in Uganda, near Kampala. Besides lack of good clean and safe water, Uganda in general is experiencing lack of electricity because Lake Victoria is so low they cannot generate power. Even the largest city has electricity for mayber 1-2 hours per day, on a good day. Imagine hospitals and schools attempting to take care of people in these conditions. All we have to do is remember Katrina here in the US and what it did for thousands.

So, please help me raise the necessary funds so we can drill a couple of wells that will supply clean and safe water for the college and about 7,500 people in 3 small villages nearby. Total cost is $7,500 and so far we have sent $4,250 towards this project and they have started - but in order to complete the drilling, they need another $3,250 -

We are so close to seeing this project and dream become reality - and with your help it will happen. Imagine how you will feel knowing you have helped provide clean and safe water for our fellow human beings. I know how I feel - and it is great!!

Help Needed for Water Project, Uganda

Where does the time go so fast? That is my question as I have a difficult time realizing that it is already June when just yesterday it was January. Is this another sign of "old age"? or is it true for everyone regardless of age?

I want to devote this update to a cause that involves helping others who are less fortunate then most of us in America. Namely, the wonderful people in Uganda who live surrounded by genocide, poverty and lack of most everything we have. These are things our news does not report. After the Holocaust in Germany, most governments and countries said they would never allow genocide again. So, what happened? There is mass killing going on and the news fails to report it. Our Governments fail to act as they said they would. And we all stand by and just let millions die. Ignorance is bliss they say, is that the reason? If we don't know about it, it must not exist?

Several years ago I got involved helping one young person who sincerely wanted an education, not only for herself, but to then be able to help others in the community in Uganda. Today I find myself involved with 3 such students, all from one parent families who exist on virtually nothing. Each one desires not only the opportunity for education, but to learn how to help their communities.

The rewards for helping have far exceeded the aid given as these people are so genuinely thankful and humble. Through this process my learning experience of this country, and the surrounding ones of Rwanda, Burundi, the Sudan, where genocide has run rampant, has both enraged and enlightened me. It has also been a huge blessing to my life being able to focus a portion of my time and money to providing some little aid as best I can, inspite of MS.

Two years later I have been made aware of how much we take for granted. Water for instance. We just turn a faucet and have either cold or hot water, without much thought at all. The small college where these students live and study is one of the few that teaches both men and women, and those who have little or no means. This school also has not much in the way of monetary support. The headmaster alone supports 30 of the students, out of a total of 400 that attend. His income is less then what we call poverty level here. And, they have two dorms, one for women, one for men, and outhouses for bathrooms. They also carry water in jerry cans for 2 miles for use in drinking and bathing. Needless to say, they do not have showers as we do, nor indoor plumbing. On top of this, the country has little electricity, Kampala itself has power perhaps 1 to 2 hours per day at best.

February of this year I learned about this water situation and the fact that the school and 3 small surrounding villages would much like to have wells drilled that would provide easier access. This involves 400 students and about 7,500 villagers all within close proximity to the school. A study was done to learn how much it would cost to bore two well holes, a time frame, etc. This study showed that a total cost would be $7,500.00. Not too much for us here in the USA, but to these people - way beyond their reach. So it would remain a dream that may or may not happen in their future.

It was easy to say I would raise the money. What is not easy, is doing this with the "Challenge" this body lives with daily - MS! Even so, there are reasons larger then feeling sorry for myself and the "challenge" the body lives with -

Two reasons -

first, helping others reduces the time spent analysing the question "why do I have this "challenge"? and puts the focus on those with worse situations.

Second, the headmaster of the St. Catherine's College in Uganda is a friend and since we are both helping students whose families cannot support them, it was almost natural to say yes when he talked about the fact the college had no water system.

However, it is more difficult to find people willing to part with some of their dollars because of the "wants" they have for more materialism. So far, have raised some $3,730 towards a goal of $8,000, so they may drill two bore holes and have easier access to water. This does not provide running water, just much easier access.

Getting out and talking to people when one's speech is not good, and mobility is nil, takes effort for sure. The rewards of sending them $3,730 far exceeds any suffering this body puts up with. National Arbor Day April 28 2006

A special day to remember where we get our clean air from - trees! Arbor Day helps remind us that we should care for our eco system on a daily basis, to learn to live with it and not destroy it.
